Early Life in Springfield
James was born on June 30, 1934, in Springfield, Massachusetts. Can you imagine what Springfield was like back then? It was the tail end of the Great Depression, so times were tough for many families, but Springfield was a vibrant industrial city. It was known for manufacturing, and places like the Springfield Armory were big deals. The city had a strong sense of community, and different ethnic groups, including the Greek community your family was a part of, often had their own neighborhoods and churches.
From High School to the Army
James grew up in Springfield and went to Technical High School, graduating in 1952. Not long after, when he was just 19, he joined the U.S. Army in 1953. This was a few years after the Korean War ended, so while he likely didn't see active combat, military service was a common path for young men at that time, providing valuable experience and often helping with future education.
A Pharmacist and a Family Man
After his military service, James returned home and decided to pursue a career as a pharmacist. He studied at the Hampden College of Pharmacy in Willimansett, Massachusetts, graduating in May 1956. Imagine learning to mix medicines by hand with beakers and test tubes! That same year, on September 9, 1956, he married your great-grandmother, the love of his life, Aphrodite (Affy) Madamas, at St. George's Greek Orthodox Memorial Church in Springfield. He was 22, and she was 25.
He started working as a pharmacist at Pine Point Pharmacy in Springfield. Soon after, they started their own family. Their son, Peter J, was born in September 1958, followed by their daughters, Maria A in November 1962, and Gina A in November 1967. They lived in Longmeadow for many years, a quieter, more suburban town right next to Springfield, known for its good schools and family-friendly atmosphere.
The Heart of the Neighborhood: Athens Candy Store
In 1969, after his father passed away, James made a big shift. He joined the family business: the Athens Candy Store, which everyone affectionately called "Pete's," located on Oak Grove Avenue in Springfield. This wasn't just a candy store; it was a neighborhood institution that his parents had owned and operated since the 1920s.
This is where James really made his mark and became a beloved figure in the community. He was known as "Pete" to everyone, and he had a reputation for being incredibly generous. He'd often give free groceries to customers who were struggling, truly looking out for his neighbors. The store was a gathering place and a cornerstone of the community for over 90 years until it closed in 2010.
Retirement and Beyond
Even after he retired from the store, James wasn't one to sit still. He became a crossing guard in Longmeadow and continued that until just a few months before he passed away in May 2023. He loved spending time with his family, especially at places like Misquamicut, Rhode Island, and Ogunquit, Maine.
James passed away on September 7, 2023, at the age of 89. He left behind a loving family, including his wife Aphrodite of 67 years, his three children, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Everyone remembered him for his kind, caring, and thoughtful nature, always ready to lend a hand, and his great sense of humor. He was truly a man who put others first and made a positive impact on countless lives.
