The Big Open Question
Doris D. Guyette married Harris Henry Riley in December 1935 in Port Henry, New York, a few months after his first wife, Loretta, died. She died on September 3, 1970, and is buried beside Harris at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Burlington, Vermont.Here's the big open question: who was John's mother? John was born in Cleveland on September 9, 1927, while Harris was married to Loretta, and when Loretta died in 1935 her obituary listed John as her son. But nearly every printed source after that, including Harris's and Doris's obituaries, presents Doris as John's mother. We believe Loretta was John's mother and that Doris raised him from the age of eight, and that's how our family tree shows it. The Ohio Birth Index lists John's birth with Harris as his father but doesn't name a mother. John's full 1927 Ohio birth certificate would confirm it for good. Either way, Doris is the woman who raised him.
